. . . And People Stayed
The company, which was run by just two generations of Feigensons for eighty years, prided itself on the long tenure of its employees. Faygo’s founders ran the company for forty years. Then, cousins Morton and Phil ran it for almost forty more. They hired several people who stayed for decades, a few even longer than the owners did. This gave Faygo direct lines back to its beginnings in 1907, with very few changes in command or philosophy.
Harvey Lipsky, known as Mr. Faygo, the company’s unofficial historian, joined the company as a chemist in 1958 and stayed for more than fifty years, retiring at age 76. He learned Feigensonian values directly from co-founder Perry, who lived until 1964.
In 2016, Al Chittaro was named president of Faygo Beverages. He had started with the company as a part-time driver in his teens in the late 1970s, when Mort and Phil ran the company. After choosing Chittaro, National Beverage Corp. chairman and CEO Nick A. Caporella said, “Al is as much a part of Faygo—as Faygo is of Detroit, starting as a teenager working part time as a driver/salesman. Detroit and Faygo both have earned iconic status in early American industry development. From soda pioneering to soft drink innovation, Faygo today is a Liberty Bell symbol that has survived and progressed as a hallmark within the soft drink industry.” One of Ben Feigenson’s grandsons, Matt Rosenthal, started by working summers as a student in the syrup room. He told the Free Press, “I would get on the bus to go home and no one would sit next to me. I had to take a shower just so I could take a shower. So sweet!” Rosenthal eventually became marketing director and was with Faygo until he was sixty-eight.
